San Mateo County

Resource Team

The San Mateo County Spare the Air Resource Team has worked to reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas production by promoting commute alternatives to solo driving.

In 2015 the Team launched the Active Trips Incentive to encourage individuals to Spare the Air by using “active trip” modes to attend work-related events or meetings. What’s an active trip? Anything other than driving alone: walking, biking, sharing a ride or taking public transit.

Why?  The San Mateo County Spare the Air Resource Team seeks to raise awareness of the many opportunities available to people to take an active trip and avoid driving alone. Most of the trips we make each day are to places other than work. Trips to meetings and events are opportunities for active trips: walking, carpooling, taking transit or riding a bike.

How can you get involved? The Resource Team is looking for “promoters” – people who organize or promote meetings and events that take place in San Mateo County – to let their attendees know that they can be entered into a drawing to win prizes, courtesy of the San Mateo County Spare the Air Resource Team, just for taking an active trip to a meeting or event.   If you would like to promote the Active Trip Incentive at your meeting or event, check out our Promoter Guide to see how to get started!

On May 1, 2014, the team hosted a commute solutions workshop: Alternative Ways to Get to Work! The workshop was held at Skyline College in San Bruno and showcased alternative ways employees could get to work. For more information, please see the workshop flier

In 2013, the team collaborated with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group on the Health Happens in the Workplace Conference. The conference was attended by 250 Silicon Valley Human Resource professionals and explored ways that “active commuting” can be integrated into benefits offerings and wellness programs.
