Cities & Counties Spare the Air
Local government can help insure that the air we breathe is clean and healthy. By joining the Spare the Air network, cities and counties can educate their entire community to reduce air pollution. Over 100 Bay Area cities and counties are already doing just that-using e-mail, newsletters, bill inserts, cable TV, and banners to motivate their neighbors to Spare the Air.
Let's take one example. Last year the City of Livermore decided to become part of the clean-air solution by passing a resolution affirming participation in the network, and then assigning a Spare the Air coordinator. They began their outreach effort by publishing one of the Air District's pre-written stories entitled "Ozone and Your Health" in their community newsletter, which reaches over 75,000 residents. Then, they installed one of our street-span Spare the Air banners on a high volume road, reaching thousands of motorists every day. On Spare the Air days, e-mail announcements were sent to hundreds of city employees, asking them to make the right clean air choices.
These actions are simple and effective. What's more, the Air District will provide all the basic materials free of cost. But we need your city or county to take the lead.
So come join the Spare the Air network and we'll give you some great outreach ideas.
E-mail Ralph Borrmann at the Air District for more information. Your efforts will go a long way toward keeping the air clean and healthy for everyone in the Bay Area.
