Marin-Sonoma Air Quality Resource Team
The Marin-Sonoma Air Quality Resource Team and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District are working in partnership to reduce traffic congestion at schools. In Marin County, Safe Routes to Schools continues to lead the way as a national model of traffic reduction at schools. The Marin model was made possible by hard work, innovative ideas and support from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. The Marin-Sonoma Air Quality Resource Team project is to expand traffic reduction efforts at schools in Sonoma County with the hope that they, too, will have a national model Safe Routes to School program in the near future. In 2005 the resource team hosted a workshop on traffic reduction at schools for teachers, school administrators and students. Since then, several traffic reduction efforts are underway in Sonoma County. The team is currently working to support those efforts, which include Analy High School in Sebastopol and Kenilworth Middle School in Petaluma. Outreach efforts are also being made to Casa Grande High School in Petaluma. Three elementary schools (two in Sebastopol and one in Santa Rosa) will implement Safe Routes to School programs in 2006! The team sponsored both Marin and Sonoma County Bike to Work Day efforts in May 2004. The team also sponsored a very successful Walk and Roll to School Day event at McDowell Elementary School in Petaluma in November 2004. If you would like to join the team in its efforts to reduce traffic and increase safety at schools, please call Jim Smith at (415) 749-4631.
