Driving less helps the environment because cars are the major source of air pollution and greenhouse gas in the Bay Area.

San Mateo County Resource Team

The San Mateo County Spare the Air Resource Team has worked to reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas production by promoting commute alternatives to solo driving. The team is planning a commute solutions workshop for 2012 for small to medium-sized San Mateo County employers, building on their successful January 2010 workshop, which drew about 90 participants. The workshop will focus on free and easy options for busy employers.

The team this year supported Bike to Work Day on May 12 by funding refreshments volunteers handed out to biking commuters at 26 "energizer stations" located along biking commute routes. The team also provided support for a regional Green Business Workshop that month held in San Jose by the Santa Clara County Resource Team.

In 2010, the San Mateo County Spare the Air Resource Team supported the Great Race for Clean Air 2010, a friendly contest that challenges Bay Area employees and employers to commit to finding alternatives to commuting by car alone for two full months. CO2 savings were calculated based on the length of the employee’s commute, their vehicle’s gas mileage and the number of miles that were traveled using one of the commute alternatives. San Mateo County winners included Cisco Systems, Shelter Network, Nektar Therapeutics and Gilead Sciences. Anthony Driver from Oracle, Redwood City, won the highest CO2 savings by an individual IN THE BAY AREA.
