Wood burning is a major source of particulate matter air pollution in the Bay Area during the winter months. The Air District’s Wood Smoke Regulation prohibits wood burning when air quality is forecast to be unhealthy, places restrictions on visible emissions, and prohibits the burning of garbage, plastics, and other unsuitable materials.

History of Air District

Since 1955, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has been working to improve air Quality in the Bay Area.

The Air District will continue to work to improve our quality of life in the Bay Area. Future challenges — like climate change and reducing diesel emissions — will require good science, creativity and community involvement.
