Air Quality Fact

Even for healthy people, polluted air can cause respiratory irritation or breathing difficulties during exercising or outdoor activities. How you are affected depends on your current health, the pollutant type and its concentration, and the length of your exposure to polluted air. In order to help keep yourself and others healthy please report pollution complaints.

Spare the Air

The Spare the Air Program was established by the Air District to educate people about air pollution and encourage them to change their behavior to prevent it.

As part of the Spare the Air program, we ask Bay Area residents to reduce pollution by making clean air choices every day. From walking and biking more often, to reducing energy consumption in the home or making “green” consumer purchases, there are a multitude of ways people can make easy, daily decisions that will improve air quality.

On these pages, the Air District provides detailed information and useful links to assist Bay Area residents in making their everyday “clean air choices.”

Winter Spare the Air

The Winter Spare the Air Season is in effect from November through the end of February 28. The Winter Spare the Air program notifies residents when particulate matter levels are anticipated to be unhealthy. On these high pollution days, the Air District will issue a Winter Spare the Air Alert which prohibits wood burning throughout the Bay Area.

Winter Spare the Air is crucial to the health and well-being of Bay Area residents. During the winter season, wood smoke is one of the larger contributors of harmful particulate pollution.

Within the Winter Spare the Air section of the Spare the Air website, residents can find information on the health effects of particulate matter, as well as detailed information about the Wood Burning Regulation and its compliance requirements.
