Wood Burning and Wood Smoke Complaints

The Air District Wood Smoke Regulation prohibits burning of wood or solid fuels when the Air District forecasts air quality to be unhealthy, restricts excessive visible smoke and prohibits burning of garbage, plastics and other unsuitable materials. From November 1 through the end of February, the Air District issues Winter Spare the Air Alerts when particulate pollution is expected to rise to unhealthy levels. During Winter Spare the Air Alerts, it is illegal to burn solid fuels (including wood, manufactured logs and pellets) in fireplaces, woodstoves or in any outside fire. Excessive visible smoke and burning of trash, plastics and other unsuitable materials is always prohibited.

The goal of the rule is to reduce emissions of particulate air pollution from wood burning in the Bay Area, particularly on winter nights when the accumulation from wood smoke poses the greatest health risk.
