Conservation Tip

Driving less helps the environment because cars are the major source of air pollution and greenhouse gas in the Bay Area.

Regional Bicycle Share Pilot Project

Coming to the Bay Area later this year – Bikesharing!

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco, San Mateo County Transit District, City of Redwood City, County of San Mateo, and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is working to pilot bikesharing in the Bay Area.

The pilot program is scheduled to launch mid-2012 and will provide 1,000 bicycles for the public’s use on a subscription basis in five cities including San Francisco, Redwood City, Mountain View, Palo Alto and San Jose.  Bicycle stations will be sited near transit hubs, high-density residential areas and key destination points such as schools and employment centers making it easier to quickly and conveniently connect to transit.

The results from the pilot will be used to evaluate bikesharing’s potential to improve air quality by replacing short car trips with zero-emission bicycles and to assess opportunities for expanding the program to include other Bay Area cities.
