Spare the Air Tonight,
Tuesday, November 6!
 |
The Air District advises everyone in the San Francisco Bay Area to avoid burning wood tonight, and to drive less, as air quality is forecast to reach unhealthy levels. Wood burning and driving are the major winter sources of particulate pollution. (Remember - there is no free transit offered during the winter Spare the Air Tonight season.)
|
Spare the Air Tonight Program
This winter’s Spare the Air Tonight season runs from November 6, 2007 through February 11, 2007. In the wintertime, as cooler temperatures and reduced sunlight diminish ozone problems, particulate matter (PM), becomes the pollutant with the greatest impact on air quality. The two major sources of PM in the Bay Area are wood burning in fireplaces and woodstoves, and motor vehicles.
When our morning forecast predicts unhealthy PM concentrations, we urge Bay Area residents to Spare the Air Tonight by refraining from burning wood, by taking public transportation, and by trip-linking any necessary evening errands to avoid higher-polluting cold starts of their cars. (There is no free transit component to this winter's Spare the Air Tonight season.) The Spare the Air Program was established by the
Bay Area Air Quality Management District to educate people
about air pollution, and to encourage them to change their behavior
to prevent it.
On this site you will find answers to frequently
asked questions about air pollution, descriptions of its health
effects, information about how various communities and employers
are working to prevent pollution, clean air tips, and a variety
of other educational resources.
In addition, the air quality forecast allows
you to keep track of air quality conditions in your region of
the Bay Area.
